Tax Information

Property Tax Mill Rates

In Connecticut, property tax rates are expressed in mills, or thousandths of a dollar. For example, a property tax rate of 29.42 mills (.02942, when expressed in decimal form) results in the payment of $29.42 for each $1,000 of a taxable property's assessed value. This is called the mill rate because the number is expressed in mills - one mill is 1/10th of a cent ($.001).

All real and personal property located within the state of Connecticut is taxable unless specifically exempted by statute. All assessments are at 70 percent of fair market value.

Oct. 1 is the assessment date for all municipalities.

Currently the state of Connecticut has not updated their state wide list of property tax mill rates, so we recommend that you visit the individual town websites or call the local town hall for this information. You may find links to the major cities and towns in central Connecticut and their official town websites here.

Connecticut State Sales Tax

Connecticut levies a 6 percent state sales tax on the retail sale, lease or rental of most goods. There are no additional sales taxes imposed by local jurisdictions.

Some items and services are not subject to sales and use taxes, for example clothing items costing less than $50.00, home weatherization products and certain energy efficient vehicles. For a complete list of exempted items and services click here.

Connecticut State Income Tax

Connecticut collects income taxes from its residents. The variable income tax rate for Connecticut is determined by CT state tax legislation. How much income tax that is withheld from your paycheck depends on which tax bracket you fall under. In general the more you make, the more you will be taxed.

Connecticut residents must file the personal income tax Form CT-1040 by April 15. When that date falls on a weekend or holiday, filers get until the next business day to submit their state returns.

All wages of a Connecticut resident are subject to the state's income tax, even when the resident works outside of the state.
